2007年3月，位于千叶县的市川市，发生了一起惨绝人寰的命案。年仅22岁的英语会话学校的英国籍女子被日本男子市桥达也杀害，随后用土埋在了公寓的浴缸内。当尸体被人发现时，市川早已下落不明。警方旋即对市川展开全国范围内的通缉，可是在长达两年七个月的漫长日子里，他就好像人间蒸发一般，不见踪迹。在此期间，市川首先前往四国，逆行参拜当地的八十八座寺院，以期能让受害者死而复生。之后他又辗转来到冲绳，遥远的南方，通缉令播报依然不绝于耳。他尝试整容，寻找工作为生，带着可怜的求生欲望行走在人生的黑暗隧道之中。 　　直到被捕后，警方通过市川的供述和他过去两年所写下的笔记，些许了解到市川逃亡期间的心境……
